It’s never too late to quit smoking – this is a message from a North Eastern doctor on a major new campaign to quit smoking – and the benefits begin within 20 minutes.
Dr Ruth Sharrock, a respiratory consultant with the Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, hopes to inspire millions of people across the North East to get the better of them this summer. Ruth’s face is a strategy that doesn’t wait and aims to give new hope to smokers who are able to retire and see the big benefits of how they feel.

“Most smokers would like to be able to stop, and it doesn’t matter if they haven’t succeeded before. The main thing is to not be discouraged but try again.”

More ways to rest than ever
Quitting smoking can be easier and less stressful to get the right support. There are several different treatments available from shops, drugs, and prescriptions that you can add to help reduce your symptoms of withdrawal:
- Nicotine Replacement Therapy provides you with low levels of nicotine, free tar, carbon monoxide and other poisonous chemicals in tobacco smoke. It can help reduce effects, such as bad moods and cravings that can occur when smoking stops. Using a patch Plus, faster-acting NRT like a mouth spray, gum, tablet, or inhalator gives you a better chance of closing smoking than using a single NRT method.
- Varenicline (brand name Champix) is a medication that works in 2 ways. It decreases nicotine cravings like NRT, but also prevents smoking and strengthens the rewarding side effects. Evidence suggests that medication is the most effective way to help people stop smoking.
- Bupropion (brand name Zyban) is a medicine originally used to treat pain, but it has been found to help people quit smoking. It’s not exactly clear how it works, but it is thought to have an effect on the involved parts of the brain’s addictive behavior.
- E-cigarettes allow people to attract nicotine without the many harmful effects of smoking, as vapor does not contain tar or carbon monoxide. Research has found that smoking e-cigarettes can help make them more willing to try than the drugs listed above. E-cigarettes are not available on prescription, though vaping is much cheaper than smoking.
Research has shown that all these methods can be effective. Importantly, evidence points to the most effective way to stop smoking if the contractor is out of service from the NHS service.
